The PhD candidate will investigate the use of AI-based weather prediction models for the prediction and climate-change attribution of extreme events such as heatwaves, extreme precipitation, droughts and severe storms. The work combines atmospheric dynamics, weather forecasting, numerical modelling and artificial intelligence. The exact emphasis of the thesis will be adapted to the candidate’s background and interests. The candidate will join the Physics of Climate and Climate Change group of CSIC at IGEO and the STREAM research group of UCM, with access to GPU infrastructure for running physical and AI weather models.
Profile: A Master’s degree giving access to a PhD programme (or close to completing one) in atmospheric sciences, meteorology, climate science, physics, applied mathematics, environmental sciences, computer science, data science, or a related quantitative field. Good scientific programming skills in Python and good written and spoken English are required.
How to apply: send a single PDF to Bernat Jiménez (bernatji@ucm.es) with the subject “ADAPT-X PhD application – [Candidate name]”. It should include your CV, a one-page motivation letter, your Bachelor’s and Master’s transcripts, and the names and contact details of two referees.
